2-day Creative Course with artists Melanie Chadwick and Pippa Alston
Sketching, layering, painting on paper and clay.
This Summer join illustrator and sketchbook artist Melanie Chadwick and painter and potter Pippa Alston for a 2-day immersive, creative course at Lowenek Art Studio, St Martin on the Lizard Peninsula.
Day One Mel will introduce you to her sketchbook practice and the range of mediums she uses to capture her subjects. You'll spend part of the day experimenting with a range of mediums, understanding how they work and can be used to blend and layer and create inspiring sketches.
You'll spend time outside drawing from the garden and beautiful surroundings on the farm using the mediums you were introduced to and by the end of the day have a variety of sketches that you'll be able to use as inspiration for the next day.
On Day Two Pippa will introduce you to her work and the range of techniques you can use to create depth and texture on clay. She will be guiding you through stencil making, and how to translate the texture you've sketched into clay. You'll then choose to either make a set of 6 tiles or a dish which will have your final design on. Pieces will then be glazed and fired and will be available to pickup or can be sent to you for an additional cost to cover the postage and packaging.
Both Mel and Pippa are excited to present this fun and experimental course, combining their different areas of expertise and practice to enable you to create something truly unique.
What's provided?
Hot drinks and biscuits. All materials for each session will be provided and you'll be creating sketchbooks during the session. You'll also have the final ceramic piece you created to show for your efforts.
What do you need to bring?
A packed lunch
A portable stool for when we go outside to sketch
A pair of wellies or walking boots plus your regular shoes
Warm clothing, (layers will be best)and a weatherproof coat in case it's needed.
For inside the studio wear clothing you don't mind getting messy.

Day 1
10-10.30am Welcome, drinks, intro to sketchbooks
10.30-11.30pm Mixed media, colour mixing and layering exploration in the studio
11.30-12.30pm Warm up exercises outside
12.30-1.30pm Lunch
1.30-3.45pm More sketching on location
3.45pm Tea break
4-4.30pm Debrief and sketchbook feedback
Day 2
10-10.30am Drinks and intro to clay
10.30-11am Practise texture, how do you translate your texture you’ve sketched into clay.
11-11.30am Pick out key features and cut out stencils
11.30-12.30am Roll our practise square and try slip/stencils/layering texture
12.30-1.30pm Lunch
1.30-4pm Make final piece
4-4.30pm Debrief and look at final pieces/clear up
